With time and perseverance, your resume will catch up to where you want to go.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Education, but not as much as you thought&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For very specialized jobs, where in school training is essential (law, engineering, sometimes programming) this bullet doesn’t apply to you. More and more executives, I meet have degrees in something they didn’t study in school for. For most jobs, they hire you because of what you can do for them, not what school you went to. There’s a reason why education falls to the bottom of the resume, and the ‘value statement’ is at the top, quickly followed by real world experience. Don’t get me wrong, education is very important, a bachelor degree is really expected in today’s workplace, but I often lean on the broad, theoretical knowledge I gained as a primer (or glossary) for me to dive in deeper in the business world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;You are a company of one&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The other observation I share with my friend (and now you) is that you are a company of one. Even though your pay check is being delivered through your employer, you are solely responsible for your direction, what you learn, how you perform, and how much you’re paid. I firmly believe that you are paid what you’re worth, so when I hear people complaining “they are underpaid”, in my mind, I translate that as you’ve “undersold yourself”, get skilled, spend time on weekends or early mornings to learn more, and apply new projects, programs and skills –or leave. Therefore, you are your own CEO, CMO, CFO, COO, CTO, you’re in control of your destiny. As you can tell, I don’t believe in fate, you are driving your ship of one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Develop your own plan&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’re with me so far, develop your own plan, both short term and long term plans, and set goals on how to reach them. Often, these goals don’t have titles or companies in them, but they describe the environment, or the end outcomes of which you want to reach. Over time these goals will change, and that’s OK, but at least you’re looking forward. Is it the section on your career achievements? Do you secretly wish you had a few more achievements listed in your resume?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In any organization, everyone has a role to play, responsibilities to shoulder, tasks to perform and targets to meet. But if you do all that, you are doing what others are doing -- that is, meeting expectations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If, however, you go beyond the expectations, you enter into the zone of performance called achievements. You create achievements when you go the extra mile. Achievements are those performances that you never forget and always feel proud of.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Achievements are important to you for three reasons:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Scarcity&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scarcity is the very foundation of any economic system. Look around and you will realize that there are always fewer jobs in the market and fewer higher-level positions in an organization than the number of aspirants.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means that whether it is getting a new job or growing within an organization, you need to stand out in the crowd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One sure way to move up the pile is to have achievements under your belt. Achievements add the silver lining to your resume. Employers love employees who constantly think, perform and value-add beyond their expectations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Self-worth&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recall how you felt when you last did something extraordinary. What were those feelings? When you deliberately strive and perform beyond the routine expectations, you enjoy greater self-worth, which is no small matter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Personal growth&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Doing repeatedly what is expected of you is a recipe for capping your own growth as an individual. You will never know the limits of your own potential unless you keep on stretching the limits of what you do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;So how can you create achievements? The process requires a deliberate effort on your part. Here is a roadmap:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Understand expectations&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, fully understand the expected outcomes. Only when you are clear about what is expected of you in a particular project, task or situation can you think about doing it better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Think beyond&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask yourself in what way you can exceed the expected outcomes. Can you finish the task sooner? Can you do it at a lower cost or with fewer resources? Can you bring some innovations into it? Can you suggest some improvement to the process for the future? Can you simplify it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;What matters most&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you brainstorm about what to do, you will be flush with ideas. Identify an idea that would matter most to your organization. Sometimes, finishing a task at a lower cost can matter more than doing it faster and vice versa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, start with small achievements instead of trying something revolutionary at the beginning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Imagine&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Leave aside everything and imagine what it would take to accomplish what you are thinking of doing. Feel the excitement of creating such an achievement. See it written in bold letters in your resume.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Stretch&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Next comes the hard part -- doing it. You may have to put in extra hours at work or face unexpected problems, including resistance from others. Persist with your plan and do it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Savor the process&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The process is as important as the result. Enjoy the journey of moving towards the intended outcome.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Celebrate your achievement&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After reaching your destination, celebrate your achievement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, even if your superiors do not recognize your efforts and achievements, don't let the disappointment dampen your spirits. Not only did he eventually join the company which had earlier refused to employ him, he went on to take it over and created an empire that everyone knows today: Starbucks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It all started in 1981, when Mr Schultz was working in New York for a company called Hammarplast, selling a line of Swedish-designed kitchen equipment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He noticed that a little known retailer in Seattle, Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice, was placing unusually large orders for a certain type of Hammarplast drip coffeemaker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Intrigued, Mr Schultz decided to find out more about this business. He paid a visit to Starbucks in Seattle and got to know its business, which was selling coffee beans. He met its owners Gerald Baldwin and Gordon Bowker. It was during this visit that Schultz got hooked to Starbucks and coffee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 130%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 100%; font-weight: bold;"&gt;He writes in his autobiography Pour Your Heart into It&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"There was something magic about it, a passion and authenticity I had never experienced in business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I couldn't stop thinking about Starbucks. Although it was much smaller than the multinationals I had been working in New York, it was so much more intriguing, like a jazz tune you can't get out of your head. I could see so many ways I could contribute."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the next one year, Schultz made several trips of Seattle, each time meeting the owners of the company and proposing the idea of hiring him. Finally, in the spring of 1982, he was invited to have a decisive dinner cum interview meeting with the owners of Starbucks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the dinner, a well-prepared, immaculately dressed Howard lost no time sharing his enthusiasm to work for Starbucks. He shared his vision to turn the little retailer into a national company. By the end of the session, he thought he had charmed his way into Starbucks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not so. A day later, he received a call from Mr Baldwin conveying to him that Starbucks had decided not to offer him the job after all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 100%; font-weight: bold;"&gt;Recalls Mr Schultz in his book&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Instead of charming them, I had spooked them. They feared that I would be disruptive. I wasn't going to fit. I felt like a bride, halfway down the aisle, watching her groom back out of the side door.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was too shell-shocked to think clearly. I saw my whole future flash in front of me and then crash and burn."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this point, most people would have accepted the outcome and moved on. But Mr Schultz decided to give it one more try. He couldn't begin to think about giving up the idea of joining Starbucks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So he called Mr Baldwin the next day and asked him about Starbuck's reservations about offering him the job. First, he listened carefully as Mr Baldwin explained how the owners saw him out of alignment with their own vision for the company. Then, Mr Schultz made a passionate pitch about how his experience and enthusiasm could help the company grow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, he made Mr Baldwin comfortable by agreeing to follow a vision which they would all agree upon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end of that conversation, Mr Baldwin agreed to give it a second thought. The next morning, Howard picked up the phone on the first ring. It was Mr Baldwin, offering him the job!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That was the turning point for Mr Schultz. He joined Starbucks and later left it to start his own company, which went on to take over Starbucks. Today, Starbucks is a multi-billion dollar company and Mr Schultz is its chairman.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If someone should turn you down from a job, remember the story of Mr Schultz and Starbucks.
